Over the years, auto repairs have been a major source of consumer complaints.

Adding to the problem is the increasingly complex technological nature of modern automobiles and the ever increasing scope of environmental and safety regulations. When professional repair technicians need constant training just to keep current, you can imagine the difficulty the average person has in being an informed consumer. As a result, there are frequent misunderstandings concerning the need for and nature of vehicle maintenance and repairs.
The types of problems reported to the American Automobile Association include:

  • Poor communication
  • Faulty diagnosis
  • Poor workmanship
  • Unnecessary or unauthorized repairs
  • Excessive cost, long service delays
  • Employee rudeness
  • Facility/vehicle cleanliness

AAA’s Response – Approved Auto Repair

When AAA examined the auto repair issue in greater detail, they determined that the primary problem faced by the majority of motorists was an inability to identify competent and trustworthy automotive service facilities. In response to this need, AAA developed the Approved Auto Repair (AAR) program to help identify repair shops that provide consistent, high-quality workmanship and a guarantee of the work performed.

AAR Programs Standards

The AAR standards are very stringent. When a repair shop applies for approval, an AAA service specialist inspects the facility for cleanliness, proper tools and equipment, a high level of technical training, and technician ASE certification. A service satisfaction survey is then mailed to over 200 recent customers of the facility. All questions must be responded to positively by 90% of the customers, or the facility will not be considered for approval. In addition, AAA checks the repair facility’s reputation with local government and consumer agencies and runs a background check to ensure adequate insurance coverage and financial stability. A committee of local club officials makes the final decision on whether a facility receives AAA approval.

When your vehicle is serviced or repaired at one of AAA Approved Auto Repair Facilities, upon request your vehicle will be inspected at no charge for items frequently contributing to roadside breakdown.

Whether you buy a used car from a dealer or from an individual, you typically have little legal recourse if the car of your dreams turns out to be more of a nightmare. A pre-purchase inspection will help you make an intelligent decision.
